Just got this from a reputable seller in antique bronzes, but he doesn't know anything about this vase. It looks old, but who knows. If it turns out to be a fake, he will take it back. Neat looking. Price $700USD.

What do I have here?

it is about 14 inches high and 7 inches in diameter. Weighs about 6.5 pounds. It took a VERY bright light to get the inside lit.

May need to make several posts to show different images.

Here is a pic with a 500 lumen flashlight shining down the throat.

Welcome to the forum!

My frank opinion is you have excellent photographic skills! I don't know enough about this object to say if it's ancient Roman or made last week, but your pics make it look very nice..!! [:)]

Thanks for the complements. I like taking pictures.

It looked black until I put a light down its throat. It was very difficult to photograph. I was using a studio strobe flash with an umbrella to get the all black picture.

The trick was in balancing the light from the flashlight with the studio strobe flash. Love the digital age where you can see results immediately.

It is a really neat piece. I am thinking about putting an LED strip in it for display.

Ok, I'll throw my opinion into the mix. Take a look at the scratches and oxidation on the base. All you guys that dig a lot of bottles, those look like the scratches on my dug bottles and the stains on the neck look like ground water stains. If it was new art glass, might it be light enough to catch the beautiful blue color and the motif around the bottom of the neck would probably be finer. Notice there is no wear on the bottom where it would make contact with a shelf for years. It ain't mexican glass, we have seen enough of that. It's not shiny like new glass. I would think that if it were really old, like bronze age old, there would be more oxidation and scratches. Here's my guess. 1800's Greek Revival times, European glass made to look like bronze age. I have no authority, only an opinion. Shoot me down with facts.
I love the piece by the way and like the idea of rope light to show it off.

Scott
