it is pontilled but I don't think that it is over 100 years old

My guess is that it is used in wine making. The bottle is filled with water and a hose is attached to the nipple at the base of the bottle. The other end of the hose is attached to the fermenting jug and as the wine ferments the gas bubbles up through the water in this bottle and does not allow air into the fermenting wine. Either that or an early glass IV bottle.[8|]

I think it is some sort of chemistry bottle. A certain chemical was in this container and could be mixed with others by unclamping a tube that led from the nipple.
