Hello, I recently purchased a fairly large lot of old dug-up bottles and I am trying to properly identify them. This is the first one I somewhat cleaned up. It is 8 7/8" tall, 2 3/4" in diameter and appears to be a dark opaque color, but when held up to the light, the center area is an amber color. The inside of the bottle isn't fully cleaned, so the light doesn't shine through as good as it should. It doesn't sit flat, but with a slight tilt to one side. There are many imperfections in the bottle and lots of air bubbles within the glass. I am new to collecting old bottles and looking to learn about them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

this bottle is an English ale 1880s to 1910 maybe .it looks like a three part mold , the heavy basalt in the sand gave the glass the dark amber color. If this bottle were American it mite have been older but it is not American .

Well this will require some extra time to cover. First of all - I can see in the second picture the shoulder seam of the two parts. The bottom has a nice deep push-up, so it should also show evidence of having been on a pontil. My next question will make you look at my home pate for dendritic mold iron knowledge. I think this bottle is what we call Black Glass, but it is just excessively dark green glass. I would have to guess, but I think I have close to a hundred black glass bottles. From small to as much as four gallon. My best one is about 24 inches high with a four + inch deep push up. An applied tooled finish, and headed to FL with us soon. I plan to have a table at the Bradenton Show this year to exhibit some black glass. RED Matthews

I agree with "sunrunner" except I think the date range could extend back earlier........say 1860s-1910. That looks like the base could have a "sand pontil" (deep cup-like depression in the center of the base in which the surface is rougher to the touch, but sometimes the "sand paper feel" is no longer in evidence) but I'm not really sure??? Has anyone dug numbers of this type of blackglass bottle in dumps or privies-- enough of them along with other bottles in the same "layer" than CAN be dated pretty accurately, so as to give us a better date range?

if a sand pontil is in evades , then it cud go back to the 1860s . the lip was defiantly tooled.

I've dug more than my fair share and have dug only one with a sand pontil from a late 1850's pit. In my experience, it is unusual to rare to find one with evidence of a pontil scar. If you google sha.org you will find a plethora of information, but be cautioned. This informative web site is generally for the advanced or experienced collector and can be overwhelming, regardless of experience in old bottles. (I'm still learning things from this site) That said, it does appear from what is viewable in your picture that it likely has a pontiled base. HTH Jack
