Masons 1853 Fruit Jar???

I found a Mason jar with a pat 53 on it........does this mean it was pat in 1853??? I thought Masons started in 1858!!! Any help would be great!!!

The number 53 is the mold number.
The patent date is Nov. 26th , 1867.
In a circle around the bottom of the bottle.[;)]
