Bought a bottle off of e-bay last week. When it arrived it had a gooey tar like substance in it.I filled it up and let it soak. When I dumped out the gunk out came something extra.I think they were reddish gray mustache or beard hairs from the 1880'S.Kinda cool aint it.Maybe kinda gross Clinton

A photo of the bottle/jar would be nice. What I assume that you bought was a jar of moustache wax. Those gentlemen in the late 1800's and early 1900's waxed their moustaches to get those long handlebars. You can still buy the stuff today. Used some myself back in the 70's. Little wifey didn't like the handlebars. What was the bottle advertised as?

many old bottles had brush applicators for things like polishes and glues. It may be horse hair, pig bistles, or other animal hair.

maybe what was in it was a "hair restorer" and it started out as only one hair!
