Here are three embossed Maine pontils I've dug. I like that they a each have different lip treatments.
"Curtis and Perkins Cramp and Pain Killer Bangor Me." This is a hard varient with the thin flared lip. I found it packed into a small pocket of dirt in between large foundation stones behind what was once an old farmstead we were renovating. There were lots of smashed case gins and shoes, plus a lot of other broken stuff. This was the only survivor. Related to the Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup products.
"C.W. Atwell Portland Me. " A relatively common bottle but one I dug with my younger brother one day behind a barn. It was in a slope of debris flowing down from under the backside of the barn. Not sure if it was once where the privy emptied out or if it was just trash from being tossed under the floor. This is the first pontilled bottle I ever found.
"Nathan Wood Portland, Me. " Nathan Wood had a very very long run as a Portland Maine druggist. You could amass a large collection of just his products alone, with many different bottle varients. This bottle was dug out of an old town dump that was picked over for the last 40 years. The early collectors got the best of it long before I ever knew it existed, but I managed to get deep enough one day and found this mixed in with some 1890's era blobs. It was a lucky find as this was an unknown size before.
