We're going digging again this Saturday. I'll see what I can come up with. This last, first dig was kinda spare of the moment and he wasn't really prepared to dig. Now we have leather gloves for him and I will pull out the hard hat and heavy clothes to protect him better. As well as being very proud, I am also usually very protective of him. Thanks for your guidance and concerns.

BTW, is a 3-pronged garden trowel with the outside tines cut off. I use one like it all the time. It digs well in the ash but doesn't break the bottles if you are careful.

Hey Dan,

I sometimes use a long handled barbeque fork with the tines bent over in the same manner.

Yours and Kileigh's looks ergonomically superior.

Looks like your idea may work too. I like using the garden trowell because it is cheap, can usually find them at yard sales for a quarter or so, and they're strong. I cut the outside prongs off with a hacksaw and am ready to go. Try it, you might like it.
