I have attached a picture of an old bottle my father bought at an auction in NYC 50 + years ago. Does anyone have any knowledge on it or what type it is ??
That is one strange bottle.... The metalwork looks like pewter or gunmetal. The design looks french, judging from the Fleur de Lys design.
Couple of questions...
Is the stopper corked?
How tall is it?
Is there any evidence of silver plating? It may have had that, and it's all been polished off. Look at the base to see if any is left.
Is there any writing on it anywhere?
My instinct is that it is a French Cologne/Perfume bottle from the early/mid 19th century, but that is largely guesswork...
Hi Andy..thansk for reply. The metal is fairly soft pewtar or lead . The stopper is a spindle with cork wrapped aroujnd it...so yes it has a cork stopper around a center shaft of lead. No eivdence of silver plating. I agree think it was some sort of liquor bottle like cognac etc....and also agree it looks european. The mystery lives on...
