Went digging yesterday at my dump on the west side of London. Found a few nice bottles with my son and brother.
My son dug the nice Gold Seal quart and pint soda's. The quart has London , Ontario embossed on the base and both have "The Coca Cola Company" embossed on the rear side above the base.
The Taylor Drug Co. Founded 1868 from London is the biggest hand made medicine I have seen. It is 16 oz. and is 8 7/8" tall !

I also found two similar style , smaller hand made Taylor Drug Co. medicines , smaller and broken. And another Taylor Drug Co. medicine but panelled, square and broken.

I also bought two fruit jar lids at a garage sale last weekend. One is the North American Glass Co. with the Crown emblem and a D.G. Co. jar lid which fits a standard quart jar. I think it might be unique because the Fruit jar book I have, states the D.G. Co. jars took a 3 7/8" diameter jar lid ( which is too big for a quart jar ).

Any suggestions.

Hope you enjoy my finds as much as I do.

Here is the base embossing. It is embossed D G C O and 988. I have not seen this embosing on a canadian medicine. It's believe it stands for the Dominion Glass Co.

D.G.Co.W. = Dominion Glass Co., Wallaceburg [Ontario] -- bottles were marked this way only during a small window of time in 1912-13 as Dominion Glass consolidated its Canadian operations under the Dominion name. The factory at Wallaceburg before being bought out by Dominion marked its bottles, S.G.Co.W. = Sydenham Glass Co., Wallaceburg. This explains the D.G.Co.W. form as a modification of the Sydenham marking. The 988 is a mould code, with the first two digits representing the bottle style and the last digit, the bottle size in volume. The Wallaceburg factory, whether as Sydenham or Dominion, produced nine standard sizes of most drugstore prescription bottle styles. The last digit pattern is as follows:

0 = 1/2 ounce
1 = 1 ounce
2 = 2 ounce
3 = 3 ounce
4 = 4 ounce
5 = 6 ounce
6 = 8 ounce
7 = 12 ounce (this size much scarcer than the others)
8 = 16 ounce

By the way, the Taylor pharmacy was established in 1868 at Watford, Ontario. Expansion to nearby London, Ontario started with one branch store and grew to two or three more branches. Oddly enough, there are a fair number of 16-ounce Taylors out there, which makes me suspect that the firm must have produced some sort of medicine retailed in larger quantities, such as cod liver oil. I've yet to see a labelled example, so I'm just speculating here.

Anyhow, I hope this helps.

Great bottle,
Glen

mctaggart67 : Thank You very much for the information. It is very much appreciated.

It will be very helpful in my digging and dating of these medicine bottles.
