Northampton, Mass. Batter Jug

My other addiction is antique engines and iron, and I found this in the flea market of the Central Mass. Gas & Steam Engine Club`s show in Orange, Mass. last year. It`s a pottery batter jug made by the Crafts Pottery in Whately, Mass. in the 1860`s-70`s. It`s stamped "Sold By Augustus` Clarke No. 1 & 2Merchants Row Northampton". I usually find a couple bottles a year at the engine shows, but this really was exiting to find! The guy was an antiques dealer but had no clue as to what he had, he knew that it had a small chip on the rim so I got it for almost nothing. I`m not an expert on pottery, but two guys in the local bottle club are, and they are both drooling to get a chance to get their hands on this! My wife likes it more, so it`s got a good home here now. Thought it would be an interesting thing to share!

Ive dove in what they call the "Northampton bottle dump". I guess people have been diving there since the 70's. Not much there except broken shards.

Yup, very cool piece. From what I saw looking, Augustus died in 1858 (the same year as his mother) so the info is wrong or the jar is that early. I suppose the name could have carried on for some time also.More research than a minute is needed I guess on my end.
