Well you know me, the eternal optimist, I found this in one of my bottle hunting creeks and immediately decided it was a civil war relic related to a company B.
Fact is I find stuff in this creek from modern times to rarely pre-1900 and rarer still pontil shards. There was a lot of civil war activity in this area. My thoughts on it were that it could be as old as all that, but probably not. If it were intended to be a monogram for some individual, though, I felt like they would not have just stamped it with a plain old B.
I have done some online research, with the closest items being identified as blanket roll buckles or harness buckles. Sure would like to hear from anyone who may be able to identify. I realize finding a civil war buckle in a creek in this good a condition is pretty unlikely, but what the hey, you never know.
