Chuck you are correct veneer was the wrong word to use.The wood however is still two types American Chestnut and American Oak. It is a painted type finish actually quite thick.The lid is made of Chestnut. The front side of the chest is also Chestnut.The rear and the sides are oak.

Do you think the little green vial was original to the box? If so what would have been it's purpose?
