lobeycat, the bottles are just lodged into the hole in the carousel and rest on a small "ledge." Do u know the exact date bottle manufacturers stopped making open pontiled bottles?
Hey N,
as you know some bottles are still blown (Open Pontil). However the common thought is late eighteen hundreds for the switch from open pontil. I think you have a good date from the previous reply. Marking on the silver will give you the best guess. Maybe even a year. Joe B
You cant really put a firm date on when pontil bottles stopped because its different depending on several factors including type of bottle (product), country of origin, and even glass house. For example USA pontil medicines mostly ended around the US Civil War. However French pontil perfumes were made into the 20th century. Your bottles may be Czech or Italian made and still be late 19th century or early 20th. I agree with trussin, its probably easier to date it by the metal part.
your dinner castor set is almost exactly like one pictured in the 1897 edition of the sears and roebuck catalouge. it is described as no.62763 dinner castor, five ornamented bottles, fancy handle and extra bright cut engraving. price $2.00
although you could buy a cheaper version for .90 cents. lol!! it would be interesting to see what it might be worth today!!
