Seems like oilves would be a bit of a PITA to get out of that jar with the small opening...

I think I'm starting to learn the text talk, I got that one! [:D]
As for the stoneware, it looks ancient but could it be? Was Atlantis really out there as some have said. That would be awesome proof!!![:D]
At any rate, very cool. Great find Brion!
PS, interesting spelling, where's that come from?

Beautiful jar! It has so much character... I would love to find something like that.

As far as the material it looks more like redware/earthenware to me. The difference would be in the type of clay used and the temperature it was fired at. This just seems to have more of an earthenware color to it from what I can see in the pics. Also, it looks like the inside is glazed to make it water (oil?) tight. This would not be necessary with stoneware as far as I know although stoneware vessels are usually glazed in some way anyway.

This jar actually had pitch in side it which was used on the rigging on old sailing ships/vessels. some of the pitchum as it was called is still inside it[8D]

Hey Brion,

It may have pitch inside it. Sailors, the world over, used it to seal and waterproof everything from the hull up. It would not be a pitch container.
