Pretty nice Jim. I like the jug. Just wondering, why does the jug say "not to be sold"?
How were they used?

It was a possession of the company which you had to return when empty, it would have been costly to try and continue to make them if people just threw them out when they were done with them. You often had to leave a deposit to insure you would return them, same thing with early bottles...

Makes sense, wasn't sure if it was for use in a bar or restaurant. I know this is probably stupid too, but was it for whiskey?

This one was, they were also used for things like Cider, Vinegar and Oil...Schwarz started in Paterson in 1868 and was maybe it's most prolific seller of whiskey and wine ever. I have many of his bottles and a few of his stoneware jugs, this is my first small one though..
