Paul Westphal Auxiliator For The Hair

Found, cleaned, and painted this afternoon. From under the water of a small creek:

Paul Westphal was a barber who started his practice in 1881. Besides cutting hair he also sold a tonic, which consisted of 55% grain alcohol, that purported to strengthen hair and prevent baldness. This particular bottle is machine-made and likely dates from about 1910-1920. I highly doubt this product would have still been legal after prohibition went into effect, though I can't say for certain.

Dug from the bank of the creek. Note the furnace/stove ash, a good sign when digging as it means old human activity. Always look for the ash.

Nice finds! I've never seen that Leonardi's before, interesting that it's got an Italian name and Spanish writing on the bottle.
Nice embossing on the Westphal too, reminds me a lot of this Canadian Booster Hair Tonic bottle I've got - I wonder if they were trying to rip off the Westphal bottle?

As for Prohibition I think he would have been okay, there were a lot of exemptions for medicinal products. Lydia Pinkham's Medicine was famously popular during Prohibition, since it was an over-the-counter "treatment" for menstrual cramps which only worked in the sense that it got the patient drunk enough to not be bothered anymore.

I found this beauty at a local dump afew weeks. Ms Pinkhams ingredients were pretty scary. I would suffer thru the cramps!
