OK, folks, for the first time in my life I think I have discovered a pre 1900 dump. It gets better, it looks to be the main town dump for an east central Alabama town... and.... even better... there are items very near the surface an it looks to be undisturbed... and, to top it off... it is a small town with only a few thousand people shown in the last census. A friend of mine who I have been out of touch with for the last several years, and since retired from a local utility company, said that about 20 years ago they were doing some work on a right of way near an old roadbed and "dug up" some "of those old, hand made, lead based bottles"... I can only guess he was talking about the graphite pontil?? Of course he had no use for any of the old bottles and on of the other guys took the ones that they dug up that were not broken... and nothing else came out of it... Anyway, like every "dead end" dump that I hear about, I went to investigate last week while on business up that way... this time it is NOT a dead end! I only had literally 2 or 3 minutes to poke around... found several old ceramic jugs broken at surface... took interest in an area with a few old metal cans crunching under foot thru the leaves... discovered broken dishes and one amber bottle and one bottle top... both BIM bottles... help with dates on this stuff? I assume pre 1900? Pic one is part of a bowl or pitcher marked "Cartwright Bros" on bottom. Quick research showed they were in business from 1880 til 1922 I think, but I was unable to find a date on this particular mark...
