I found the one on the left when I was a kid, and recently bought the one on the right off ebay for $5. Made by American Glass Works at I believe their Richmond, Va factory I've always loved the color of these and I believe they came out of the factory that way. Slightly different sized embossing I think they were made in 1924 and 1925.

I could see if whistle was a grape drink making them this color on purpose, but it was orange soda. Had to look like mud in a purple bottle. I can remember finding the darker one in a surface dump but can't remember if I picked it off the surface or just under, we did both at that site. One thing for sure it wasn't irradiated except possibly by the sun. The one on the left is from Chattanooga, Tenn and the one I just bought is from Baltimore.

Gross, but really neat bottle. Love Purple.I'll have to keep my eye out for one of those.[]
Read under the history of seven up about:
Charles Leiper Grigg
who invented and marketed his first soft drink called
"Whistle".
you probably already know, but i just learned something
and later Whistle made other flavors.
So, could this be a grape from later?

Thanks ladies and Rick. That's one of my favorite childhood bottles.
[;)]GEEZER! That would be nice to know if they did it on purpose or were wasting the manganeze. Most supplies were cut off by then but some supposedly still had stockpiles.
