Umm, I'm no virgin at this whole digging thing....Forty years in the fields and privies, and this bottle is REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have already been asked to send pics of it for a Civil War Mag Cover..

I was afraid this would happen. There is no doubt that yours is real. It's the one on ebay that I and others feel is a Dog River modern repro.

You've got a great bottle there, and a neat story about digging it at a Civil War camp to boot!

The one on ebay is definately a reproduction. They have a crudely tooled lip (the real ones either have a rolled lip or a more typical 19th century tooled lip), they have a terrible fake pontil (the real ones are either open pontil or smooth base) and the genuine examples usually don't have the really wavy glass.

Here are the pair of US Navy bottles I found underwater up here in Maine... US Navy pepper and US Navy mustard.

Even found a flint glass, open pontiled US Navy mustard in the same general vicinity!
