I seems I' m doing my best digging here in Omaha looking for old ravines behind businesses and homes. I' m digging out a property thats long abandoned and the finds are turning out to be around 1900 or so. I' d like your ideas on ravines and how to ' see' the bottles below the ground, as they were strewn and gathered by rainfall etc. I' m about 1.5 feet below the surface and still turning up old cans, formed bricks and the bottles ! How will i know when to stop and whats the best way to get dirt out of the hole without STANDING UP to do it ! :) -Dave.

You will find that below the layer of tip there is clay/soil that is " different" and does not look messed up, sort of hard to explain but you will get a feel for it.
diggerjeff' s advice is all good there [;)] .

It was in a gully as we call them here that I found my first ever bottles, been hooked ever since [:D] . I was walking along the top of the same gully (on our land) the other day and found two bottles on top! .
