Excavation workers sell antique bottles on the tailgates of their trucks.

Antique Glass Bottles Found Under Southcore Financial Centre & Delta Hotel Toronto, The Story of Rees' Wharf

Did I make any mistakes? I'm keen to fix anything I get wrong so that my error doesnt ripple through time

My focus is on the antique glass bottles that were liberated from the ground by excavators,

In present condition, I reckon if all of these bottles were sold as one lot on eBay tomorrow they would fetch approx two thousand dollars - combined value with the blue Pilgrim Soda and Commercial Ink Co bottles being most notable. Many of the Toronto cream and tan stoneware ginger beer bottles found on the lake shore are being bought privately by a Toronto bed and breakfast with unique display cases - thats where this Bill Robertson went. The interior is modeled on 1840s Age of Sail.

The bottles above are great, and although typical they're highly collectible - the one exception is this crusty beer bottle,

this piece is key to the history of Hornby Ontario, and there's a story here - its a puzzle how a Hornby beer bottle ended up down here at the base of Toronto, or perhaps testament to the quality and distribution of Brayn Bros Brewery in the early 1970s!

Very well written and a great article. I wonder what makes excavator guys (and gals), so into bottles. Is it because they find so many? Is it because it's fun to dig up something (because not everyone thinks so, which is weird to us diggers). Or, did they get into that line of work partially because of what they might dig up? Those are some great bottle pics too. I had to stop and comment as I resume reading the story.

I'd really like to visit Toronto. Sometimes, we get signals from their radio stations, here which is kind of neat. Canada and nearby areas, like Lake Champlain have some great historical areas. I wonder what has been found in the Province of Quebec. We used to go up there a lot in college.

I'm all for civilization, but I like how the area looked before!

I'm with you RedGinger.

Each one of these bottles has a story about how they ended up in Lake Ontario in 1850s and 60s during US civil war and 1870s during landfill. But this is just part of their adventure - now they'll get boxed up and sold along major highway routes north to cottage country. The HWY 11 antique shops that dot the side of the road on the approach to Lake Muskoka are thirsty for these bottles (common glass that wouldnt fetch much on eBay but look rare and special), and that will be another part of their journey.

Here's the view looking the other direction (east) on Front St, Toronto lake shore 1842

I believe that's the courthouse, and a furniture factory? and you can see Upper Canada College in the background.

Very cool bottles. I love those stoneware beers.

It's also good to know that Julian Smith digs bottles... [sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif][:D][:D][sm=tongue.gif]
