Hi All,

I found an old bottle whilst renovating my house and it has a rounded bottom so doesn't stand up. It says "Dows Clark & Co - Chandos St, Strand" - please can anyone tell me if this is rare?

Thanks

Welcome to Antique-Bottles.Net !!

The round bottom was to prevent the bottle standing upright and therefore to keep the contents in contact with the cork which remained wet, swollen and in place.

This is an interesting one from the research point of view because Chandos Street is nowhere near the Strand (maybe the premises were in Chandos Street and the Strand). Also I can find no record of Dows Clark & Co in my Victorian trade directories.

You are going to have to do some research! The Museum of London may be a good place to start.

Round bottom bottles are quite common but nice to find one in your own house.

Hi Roger

Thanks for the info - I will try to find out more info - I wondered if it was Dows Port (even more interesting for me as I visited Graham's factory in Porto last week)

Thanks again

Mark
