Seals were used by the English or Dutch on a regular basis, there is no documintation to prove which was first.

The seal was used because when a bottle was hot enough to press a label into the glass it would push the glass in and do damage so the bpttle was cooled a glass blob applied and a seal press in.

Seals were used long before embossing came along. There are examples of Egyiptian bottles with seals but it was not common.
