I live in a slate quarry town and have never heard of that, will have to put that one on my bucket list!

That is an interesting bottle.Great color. In 50+ years of collecting and digging bottles here in
Northern New England never happened to run onto one of those. Must have been quite limited
production. Something else to watch for.Great find.

Hi Red,

Reading the patent information further, it would appear that there was a cork (with a small hole in it, to allow water to pass) in the mouth. A sponge would be wired to the cork and would be used to wipe the chalk marks off. A screw cap would be fastened to the thread on the bottom, with a Chamois cloth threaded in to it, for drying off the slate, after washing. So, there would not have been a handle, per se. Most teachers at that time tended to be single females (if they married, they were no longer allowed to teach) with smaller hands. This small bottle would fit well in to their hands and pressure would be transferred directly to the slate, rather than wrestling with a handle.
Pretty clever, me thinks.
