Marc and I hit a couple privies in the North. Got skunked on a barrel and started a 12 foot brick liner. At 4 foot hit a 20's milk. Then Chris called and we quickly back filled and headed South. Got there in time to help finish up two pontil era holes but just a couple of glass and pottery shards. A later footer addition probably screwed up the holes. Marc took off and the rest of us headed West. We dug two 4x4x5 boxes and got some stuff and then since no one really cared about the Stuperbowl we decided to try another box across the ally.
Turned out to be a weird hole and not a box but a brick liner. Started out as a curved cornered square then changed to more of a sharp corner square and then stepped in about two bricks worth. That continued for only maybe a foot to the bottom. The entire privy was lined with mortar.
Dug a Pittsburgh double eagle flask, a Bennett chamber pot, beer, pottery and some meds. Busted stuff included a child's cup and ABC plate, child's bank etc. Lots of stone, clay and glass marbles and buttons and a broach.
Just a couple of cleaned up pics.
Here's wax sealer

Clean example to replace my busted one.

These went for bigger money around Sept 11 as the address embossed on the bottle is 9 & 11. OOOOOH scary

was a beautiful day to dig up here, betting it was nice down there too. I was burning to get out and dig but my partner wasn't having it, wanted to watch the steroid bowl... O-well. You gotta wonder if the child broke that bank open and threw it in the hole or if a more devious sibling or parent was the culprit!

The entire privy was lined with mortar.

Is that pretty common for privys down your way? I thought that was a cistern thing. Or is it a later change to the construction techniques for fear of seepage/contamination?
