A 1/2 pint I found laying on the bed of a brook, and a 16-panelled pitcher that I dug from the usual spot.. Sad that the bottle has 2 flash cracks, but I believe it is the oldest thing I've found to date! Any suggestions on cleaning inside at the shoulders?
We've had tons of rain and the small brook behind my house has been really cranking.
I also found a nice complete Queen canning jar with original rubber gasket. I assume they're common but would appreciate any info.
Thanks.

Very nice, I have good results with road salt and dish soap. As for the cracks has anyone ever tried what is used on your windshield to keep it from getting bigger? I'll try it on a slick. Unless it's been done already.

Thanks, Mailman. I will try that. I filled it with white vinegar and let it soak, but not much more came off. I just can't get at those shoulders.

Makes me want to look in the little creek that runs through my neighborhood. Neighborhood was built in the 70s, but the land was farm land, and the creek has been there for a while and had a small pond/lake at the end of it.

Yes I have. It does not dry hard and leaves a tacky feel to the repair. I would use Opticon in a heated vacuum chamber. This is how they fix cracked emeralds and opals. The bottle is not worth the cost. I know you are going to find ones that are not damaged and nicer than this. If you want to play around opticon fixes rub marks chips cracks. I also mix in Alcohol based resin pigments. Here is a Florida water I repaired a large chip and a chunk off the top and side of the lip. It was light aqua colored.

I still have to get used to using this. You can see the area when you zoom it. It is harder to see in person. All and all not many would pick it up. This is from the front.

Thanks, Robby,
I'm sure I'll find better examples. My probe will be here any day. Do you ever probe river/creek beds? Any tricks to it, if so?

How long a probe are you getting? Rivers by me are deep with mud and silt. I can send a 6 foot probe to the handle with ease. The rivers are too deep to be walking around in. I am restricted to the banks and any sand bars that build up. You can look for signs of glass on the surface on the bank that would be a good place to probe. If you can walk the creek you should look in the deeper holes, along side downed trees. On bends the water moves faster on the out side of the bend the slower inside is where sediment drops. If you have any area that show signs of having any activity at a time in the past. Goodluck and happy hunting.

Thanks, Robby,
I could only afford a 3 foot probe for now. I plan on digging first and then using it in the hole. This is really just a small brook. Actually, it's pretty long, but at its deepest, I'd say 1 1/2 feet. I can easily see the bottom, and there are a lot of sand bars. Great info.
Thanks!
Steve
