Unidentified object?

Hi, i have been given this box which is made out of tortoise shell and mother of pearl but i am unaware what it would have been used for as it is very slim (please see pictures) If any of you could help me out on this i would be very grateful. Many thanks

Looks like a cigarette box. I'm probably wrong. Can we get some measurements and what is that on the inside? Almost looks like red cloth? Swizzle

Yes it would appear so however it is to small as it is only 5mm wide. It is also 8cm high and 7.5cm length. Thanks

Some of the cigarettes I used to smoke were long, skinny and made you feel funny. lol Swizzle

It is definately Victorian but it is a card box. In those days when a lady or gentleman would pay a visit to someone they would carry their own personalized announcement cards. Upon arrival at someone's home they would give their card to the servant that aswered the door their card so that the servant could announce correctly whom had arrived to the master of the house. Nice little box.

Very interesting piece of history. This ones been driving me nuts to. I surfed the web and checked out ebay and couldn't find nothing myself. Congrats on a cool piece of history ukbrad. Swizzle
