My brother called me monday about a house, an old house,1788, that was going to be demolished 5/13/09 and was this morning, so I went to see if the bottle Gods would smile upon my wretched soul. Found only 1/2 of one bottle, top half, no embossing. Sounds like a bad day until I met a older gentleman digging as if they were going to tear the house down in a couple of days! Asked him what he was after and he said pipes, clay pipes.Seems this man knew something I didn't, this place was once owned by a man named John Tabor who was a pipe maker from around 1850 - 1912. So I decided to dig with this man, or maybe he let me dig with him, seems not only did this man know there were pipes around but knew quite a bit about the maker, he wrote a book about this John Tabor. Well needless to say it's always nice to learn from tha experts. Don't know if this is the right forum, went looking for bottles...

They used a reed mouth piece. most of these were shipped from NH down around FL up the miss to the missouri into montana, woming to trade with the Indians and trappers for furs. They been found in many frontier forts.

joethecrow, the guy had dug on this site back in the 70's when it was a single family home, so he really couldn't tear it up. Theres only about 20' on each side of the house to the property line so you were limited on where you could dig. Found most of the stuff right in the front yard on either side of the stairs going down to the street. Looks like he could have used pipe rejects for mulch. The excavator broke down today so we couldn't get into anything today, try again tommorow.
