The purpose is to get rid of it from the house furnace or stove, they dumped it where they dumped the rest of the trash. They threw it over the trash to take away the smell and it built up in layers. But the main gole was to get rid of it.In privy's it was used to keep the smell down also, but it was used a little at a time, to coat the top of the fresh contents.[8D] thats where the (layers come from in privy's).

Rick, Remember too that this stuff is messy and often still had hot embers embedded in the ashes. Privies were a good place to dump. Keeps from dumping in the back yard and setting the neighborohood on fire. We get fire calls where someone has dumped the ashes in the plastic curb containers and also dumpsters. Some dumps have ash layers a foot or two thick . That's a lot of ash hauling.

Could you date a dump by the use of ash layer? would a 1930's dump have this ash? Curious? LEON.
