Strongly Alkaline and volcanic soils seem to ruin (or improve, depending on your opinion [] ) glass, we have highly Acidic clay soil here and most bottles are sparkling mint yet travel over to the Western districts (see dig storys on Oz-rileys website) with volcanic soils and even out of the creeks it's sometimes hard to read the imbossing the etching is so bad.
It's mostly the Lime they put in the dunny holes and tips that do it to bottles there, it seems to depend on conditions in the ground a lot too obviously, moisture and temp. will make a big difference.
