I nabbed this nice Cathedral pickle, via "silver pick", at the Reno show yesterday. It was dug at a nearby Gold Rush town. It really amazes me that these fragile containers survived the daunting trip around Cape Horn to San Francisco, then up the river to Sacramento, followed by mule train to the mines. After all this they were emptied of their contents and discarded, only to be dug up 150 yrs. later by a collector.
This one is greenish aqua, 11 1/2" tall, with a nice jagged open pontil mark.
