Well, after almost two years, I finally hit a small early 1800’s trash pit and man oh man how SWEET it was…even if I had the hole thing dug out in two days. Well, I think most of you remember a post I made not so long ago with a couple pontils I found in the same dump I got the milks the other day….you know the quiet farm dump….well, I decided to explore the area a little more and just wander around along a network of stone walls. This was in the general area of where the large farm dump was….but before I knew it I was in the middle of the woods and stumbled upon a old access road….so naturally I started walking down this almost totally grown in road. It led to a small clearing and BINGO! I found an old well…BINGO AGAIN!! A tiny cellar hole!! So I scratched around in the small cellar hole…started coming up with pottery shards and broken Stoddard and Keene ales/whiskeys….I KNEW I WAS INTO SOMETHING OLD….then a small unembossed pontil surfaced….then another….and another….and….well you know the rest….wait…..it gets better. After digging about 4 pontils out of the cellar hole and finishing up my work in there…I start wandering around the back yard area of the hole. I saw a small impressed area that looked like it could have been an early privy or an early trash pit of sorts. By this time I called my digging partner and told him to get his @$$ over to the area. By the time he got there, I had the pit half dug and was up to my waste in pontiled shards and bottles. When all was said and done I left with 12 pontils including an embossed Dr TOBIAS VENETIAN LINIMENT. Even though my digging bud arrived late and finished the pit…he scored 2 unembossed pontils including a duplicate of the large pontiled utility you saw in the pics. His best Score came last……it was an early unembossed STODDARD FLASK…..I didn’t get a pic of it yet but I will I promise. The flask just missed being pontiled….but it easily could have been….everything else was?? The other blown…but not pontiled bottles in the pic include a nice, clean S.S.P. flask and some others…including a weird mass bottle that has a pilgrim and the state of mass embossed on it….pretty cool. Well I hope you enjoyed the story…I know you will enjoy the pics!!! The last time I found this many pontils in one place was 2 ½ years ago when I dug a cellar hole with my best good buddy Rich….this one comes in 2nd to the best dig I have been on. The dig with Rich was 1st . I found a 3 mold geometric ink on that dig…Enjoy the photo’s!!!!!!!
