I thought that this was kinda unusual - a canonball from the civil war. It was an 1860s era privy and next to this privy was another and that one had a rifle and bayonet in it. These were dug right in the back yard of a house in the middle of our town.

I have dug too much strange stuff to even remember. Horse skulls are common, as are bicycle parts, wagon wheels, bathtubs, and other assorted household goods. Human skulls are different, though. I have found two over the years, one an Indian and the other a caucasian that must have been used as a specimine. At least that is what the ME told me. One privy contained a cannonball that fit perfectly down the bore of a gun at Sutter's Fort, here in Sacramento. The distance was 8 blocks, a typical cannon shot from the fort.

Oh yeah, one Old Sacramento pit, where Fanny Ann's Saloon is now located, contained a complete dog skeleton that had a leather collar with brass City of Sacramento licences for 1883 and '84 bradded onto it. The collar still functions, but I no longer have it. A dog tag collector levered me out of it with a Model 1894 Winchester SRC in trade.

Strangest thing I have found was a small 1930s screw cap bottle full of human teeth and a couple pieces of broken jaw bone.

Strangest thing my friend dug was an 1860s red ware female pleasure device in the shape of a you know what. The thing had vanes and a head on it too. I told him to keep for his collection but he sold it for some real good money.

Tom, Ive heard of people finding dildos before in pits and one in a dump. your the 3rd now ive heard about. 2 ceramic ones and one was glass, one of the ceramics was even double headed from what I was told lol. All pre 1900.

Rick, can you post pictures of that bear claw again. I was thinking about it and it might be a boar tusk.
