    Some of my better bottles

I've only been digging for about 3 years, but haven't done too bad considering I spend most of my time relic hunting.

    Colonial chamberpots

Here's the indian artifacts from the site A nice variety.

    Colonial chamberpots

The chamberpots are Westerwald, and were imported from Germany. Chris - I will post some indian artifacts later - I don't have the pic here at work. I've found mostly pottery, arrowheads, and a hammerstone. The rock you see in the pic with the chamberpot is just something I dug out of the...

    Colonial chamberpots

Hey Road Dog There are definitely 3 separate chamberpots. The one on the left has the complete upper rim, although it can' t be seen in the pic. The one on the right definitely doesn't match the middle one either, although I thought otherwise originally. Plus, the pieces for each of these...

    Colonial chamberpots

Been digging in my usual creekfront colonial trash pit again. Over the years, I've made many interesting finds there including ceramics, glass, pewter cutlery, buttons, coins, indian artifacts, etc. The number of black glass spouts and bottoms, in particular, has been very high. This had to...

Want to put together a privy digging brochure

Decided it would be to my advantage to utilize a nicely done color brochure to help me get permission to dig at old homes in a particular neighborhood. I know some folks have used them with great success, and wanted to give it a shot. Was just looking for some tips, recommendations, examples...

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

Kastoo - no, I haven't started that process yet. I just finished digging the site last weekend, and plan to start sorting out all the boxes of shards soon, and will attempt to try and glue some items together, if I can find enough pieces to do so. I will definitely post some reassembled stuff...

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

Ron - no, I haven't found any evidence of glueing/repair to any of the items I've found. Like you said, guess they kept reusing stuff as long as practical before trashing it. All of the colonial pits I dig are in rural areas, although I'm sure you could find them anywhere there was activity...

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

Hey TomsNutt - to answer your questions, I just use warm water and a small brass brush, nothing more. Occasionally for the rough edges, I went with a soft toothrush which was better at getting in all the nooks and crannies. As far as finding something whole, no luck there. But at the site...

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

Hey Ron - I'm in eastern VA. There's lots of these colonial pits around this area. I'm already helping the local archaeologist in locating and digging a similar pit at a site right next door on city-owned property before it gets developed. She doesn't appear to be interested or have the time...

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

One last pic showing part of a medallion off a bellarmine jug(?), and some other misc stuff. Wild looking creature of some sort. That's it for now. Have my eyes on another early pit, but may have to wait until the fall as I'm not too keen on snakes and ticks.

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

Here's a shard with the monogram "WR" and crown, which either stands for King William III or William Rogers, the poor potter of Yorktown.

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

I dug over 800 clay pipe stems and bowls here. Must have been a tavern site.

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

Here's another box of the typical shards and glass coming from this site.

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

Here's some of the stuff cleaned up, which includes some pieces from an early westerwald tankard.

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

Here's a sample of what was coming out of site #2. I ended up with 10 boxes of shards. Need to start the sorting process and see if I can glue some things back together.

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

I got tired of digging these things, but the hope for a whole bottle kept me going.

Some recent colonial pit digging finds

When I wasn't detecting this winter, I was searching out and digging colonial trash pits. Was successful in finding a couple early ones. No whole bottles as usual, but did find a lot of cool stuff. Both sites date to about 1650. First 2 pics are from site #1, showing the opened hole, and...

    A nice jug

What Tools Do You Use To Dig?

Here's my arsenal of tools Don't use them all every time out, but generally keep them with me just in case. You just never know what you might need. Picture reduced in size - please see Help - Using the Forum ---> Uploading a Picture - Admin
