    Yup Bruce, I still remember the very day! Matt also dug a couple of the Louis Lowentrout ones which are a bit later than the one you have posted.

    Vulcanized rubber. Same as lice combes made by the Goodyear company in 1851.

    I'm not aware of any. I only collected from 10-15 yrs old over there. I know they had a handful of early open pontiled stuff but it is mostly victorian age for collectors.

    ...not much more to add other than what appliedlips has already said. When it comes to privy digging there are no courses to go on which teach us about compaction and soil types. That being said, the experience we have gleaned over many years of digging tends to be our educator and tutor...
