I titled this "Weekend Wonders" because after you see it you might "wonder" why I bought them. The answer is because I haven't bought a soda bottle in so long that I was desperate to find something, anything. But actually, I didn't do too bad. I attended a once-a-year antique street faire, and although there were very few soda bottles for sale, I did manage to come home with the following. If nothing else, they make for a good sampling of years.

The first one is a mint condition "Quality" deco - aqua green - Coca Cola Bottling Co. - Freemont, Nebraska - Owens-Illinois mark 3 <(I)> 1 Which I believe is for 1931 (I need to do more research).

The second one is a 7up - San Diego, Ca. - Owens-Illinois/Duraglas - 23 <(I)> 45 (1945) Although considered common, it's still an upgrade from the two others I already had. The 1930s and 40s 7ups are somewhat hard to come by with decent paint.

The third one is a bit of a puzzler. I knew right away it was a no deposit / no return, but one I had never seen before. It is a true acl. And based on some quick research I did, the link below suggest it is from the 1970s. It is a bit of a mystery bottle for me, but still a keeper in my book.

By the way ...

1. If someone is interested in the Nebraska deco, please let me know. I'm interested in trading it.

2. If you know anything definite about the Frostie acl ... like rarity - value - etc; please let me know.

Thanks a lot. And have a great Sunday evening. I'm just going to kick back - have a couple of brewskies, and fall asleep watching the boob tube. Isn't life sweet? [sm=lol.gif]

The Frostie bottle is late 80s early 90s. I bought one at a gas station in 1992 a drank it. Good stuff. I know some of these were produced in Los Angeles and I would bet that is where yours is from. Even though it's a relatively new bottle I have seen them sell for $10 on ebay. I think it's a great looking amber bottle with a big 'ole label.

Thanks guys ~

That nails it on the Frostie as being late 1980s. It's definitely the one shown on gono.com which is listed as image F/1988. And with it being a nd/nr, it may be one to watch for in about twenty years.

I did a little more research on the deco bottle from Fremont, Neb., and it has to be the earliest Owens-Illinois mark I have ever seen. I don't have a lot of decos, but I suspect that not that many of them have the early Owens-Ilinois mark. Here's what I came up with about it ...

Here's the mark again ... 3 <(I)> 1

In 1929, Owens Glass Co. merged with one of its major competitors, the Illinois Glass Co. to form the largest glass company in the industry. The merger between the Owens Glass Co. and the Illinois Glass Co. brought under the Owens umbrella the "largest individual bottle plant in the world." The merger was formally approved on April 17, 1929.

Request ...

The next time any of you deco or non-acl/embossed collectors go through your bottles, please check for the Owens-Illinois mark and see if we can find a first use 1929 or 1930. That could make for an interesting discussion in it's own right. I know there are tons of acls with the mark, but how many pre-acls have it?

Thanks,

SPBOB

Just for the record here's the Owens-Illinois mark on the "Quality" deco bottle from Fremont, Neb.

The number at the very top is a 1 ... I am assuming at this point that it is a 1931 bottle. By the way ... how much is a "Full 1/2 Pint" ? [8|]

Based on some additional research I did, the first Owens-Illinois makers mark "should" look like the one below. Hopefully someone will come up with a pre-acl / embossed deco-style bottle that will either confirm or refute this. Additionally, the 1930 mark should be similar with the double-digit date separated on either side of the circle-diamond logo like this ... 3 <(I)> 0 ???

Streator IL plant of Illinois Glass was still using the old mark in 1930. I have bottles marked 29S and 30S.
