Dove a couple of days ago, got a basket full of stuff, no pontils, some milk bottles etc. Water wasn't too cold, had a good fun time. I got these two insulators. Insulators are so tricky to value. I dont have my text books/ price guide with me at the site obviously. So sometimes if I get an insulator that I know is different, and looks like a good one, it can drive you crazy on the drive home. I see insulators listed and valued at $5000 and more! And they are threaded! Just a slightly different shape or embossing or color.

Both of these are good ones, and in good condition, valued I think from $20 ish for the white one ( U-14) , to $60 ish for the aqua ( Cd 196 ). All the way home you're thinking "what if it's worth $10K? think of all the bills I can pay".

Not a good way to be a "hobbyist", I know, but I'm only human.

They are really cool ones, I was happy to get them, and I'm hoping there are more there, as they were located pretty close to each other at the bottom of the river, with their wood sticks still in them.

I guess if this one was milk glass instead of white ceramic, it would have been a really valuable one. Close but no cigar.

thats all the pix here

I'm going to dive again in a couple of days. Snowed pretty good here, but that just pisses me off and makes me want to dive more, just to spite the snow :]

good luck all

The glass one is a good find. It's a telephone transposition, CD 196. The value sounds about right... it's tough to find one of these without some drip point chipping. I can't tell from the photo, but it's worth having someone look at the pin. This type of insulator was made to be used on a special "transposition pin" that has a longer threaded area than the ordinary type. I'd guess relatively few of them were actually installed on the transposition pins and crews just made do with the equipment they had.

The porcelain one is too large to be a U-14, and it looks like it has an inner skirt. Does it have any marking?

Nice finds! The CD 196 can range from anywhere between $25 and $150. Condition is really the key with those. If there are less than two total drips that are chipped, then the higher end of the range is certainly possible. If it's really beat, probably $25 to $40. The porcelain piece is an interesting shape, but because they're are so few porcelain collectors out there, I would say $15 to $20 would be the range.
