I recently picked up a blackglass bottle and was wondering what time period it's from and it's country of origin. Also what type of pontil does it have. I'm thinking it might be English.

Hello Just glass, I saw your post hesterday obviously no one posted a reply. I have about a dozen black glass early bottles and some where I have a book from a Van den Bosch that has a lo of information on the diference of the pontil marks from each country. I will look for it today - and maybe I can find an answer to your question. RED Matthews

I don't know a thing about black glass, I guess it would probably be before 1860 and Free Blown?

The kick up base indicates to me it is foreign to U.S. and probably held a rum. Nice drippy applied lip. Is that a graphite pontil? If it is, I would agree before 1860-1870 era.Joel

Thanks for the info. Base doesn't appear to have any iron on it although it is very rough and pontil is smooth. I would love to own a true 1700's English mallet bottle but they are big bucks and well over my bottle budget. Im pretty sure Im not going to find one washed up on the shore of Lake Champlain here in Vermont. Maybe if I trade 1/3 of my collection I could score one.
