I picked this up today at an local antique store. It was a more than fair price for such a large piece of glass. It's embossed with the eagle on both sides and has two bands of stars. I'm hoping someone will know an age, maker, rarity, value, etc. Any information is greatly appreciated. I can make out 1776 in the middle of the bottom, but I'm smart enough to know it isn't nearly that old.

For $20, it will sure make a nice change bank. The only problem is, it will be to heavy to carry once it's full.

Change jar / jug is the best use for such items. I have such an item given to me by a well meaning Grandchild. I put nothing but pennys in it and when it is full we have a family party. When they come over, maybe once a month, they throw in their pennies and speculate / fantisize about what they will do at the party. Of course, PaPa has to salt the jar liberally in between visits so the party comes around quicker.

Great Fun. LUV IT ! ! ! !

Well I started a post for this thread and just lost it. I have an amber one like these and I have been a big collector of BIG BOTTLES since I worked on the mold engineering and manufacture of them with Arrowhead Puritus, Oens-Illinois, McKee Glass, and others. Most of them were made for Liquor Store Windows, Gift Shops, Department Stores, and Water supply companies. Most were made on three section machines with a first form parison (Blank Mold) - a second stage parison form and then a Final Mold for the embossed or decorated bottle or jar. Some of the Whiskey Bottles were 26" to 29" tall. These simulated milk bottles were about 24" high I think, I have a large Balentine Flask that was labeled and then cracked about ten years later due to inadequate annealing. Proper annealing was a challenge - and critical.
>Also a fair warning; if used to collect change in empty very carefully by laying the jar over on a pillow or rolled up run and draw the change out with a long bent wire hook. Many have broken when lifted because the heal strength couldn't support the load weight of the coins.
When I get back to Florida I will check the bottom of mine to see if it has the 1776 embossed on it. Enjoy!!! RED Matthews
