Hi everyone,

Here are two more bottles from the group of them that I got in Vallejo, California, as mentioned in my previous post with the Saxlehner’s Bitterquelle bottle.

These two bottles are both basically identical except for slight differences in the embossing on their bottoms. Both bottles say “DR. S.B.H. & CO.†and “PR.†on their bottoms, this lettering being arranged around the bottom of the bottle in a circle.

Each bottle also has further lettering on the bottom, within the circle formed by the embossing described in the previous paragraph. On one of the bottles, this says “REGISTERED 71â€. Does this mean that the product or its bottle was patented in 1871?

On the other bottle, there’s simply a letter “I†in the center of the bottom.

I searched around on the internet, and according to the information that I found, these are called “Peruna bottlesâ€, because they contained Peruna, which sounds like it was some sort of patent medicine that was basically just liquor. This was supposedly a very popular product in its day and was invented by a Dr. Samuel Hartman. Is this correct, and can anyone tell me any more of the history behind these bottles and the product sold in them?

Also, the color of these bottles is what is referred to as “aquaâ€, correct?

Pictures are at these links:

Thanks again for everyone’s help,

Mike

Very late here but I have one And I believe that the one saying registered is the newer of the two. They were both from sometimes in the 1880s or 1890s

Here’s one with the label that sold for 15 bucks on eBay (earlier version) slick one sold for 6.50 as well.

There is more to learn but that’s all I can tell you.
