Found this Jar on a dive, i think it may have been a fruit container? It is iron pontiled with a large grooved lip or maybe wax sealer lip? Does anyone have info on this jar's age ,rarety and value? It is great looking i have never seen one like this before.I whish all my bottles came out of the water in this condition.[8D]

Brion,
Did you clean any residue off the bottom of that jar? It is an iron pontiled fruit jar and should have had a dark residue on the bottom. If any is left, do not try to remove it.
I believe you have a #2744, in the Red Book, #8, if that is a quart jar.
The grooved ring, wax sealer and iron pontil would indicate pre 1860.
I'm not sure on current values, but it should be worth about $500.00, WITH NO DAMAGE.
Great find!
Bill

I found this jar as is in silty/sandy bottom, most bottles found underwater lose any residue or dirt due to the salt water and the sand polishing them with tide and current shifts. This jar is of the quart size and no damage.Thank you guys for the help i will keep this one and look for more nice finds[8D]

Absolutely incredible!!! I gotta agree with Woody on the price estimate. A.Stone jars are very old & very highly coveted among jar collectors. Most of these jars are found with some degree of damage to the groove ring. You've got yourself quite a find with that damage free example. Congrats on a great find!!

My book, The Collectors Guide to Civil War Period Bottles & Jars -- 3rd edition, lists your jar at $600.00 including a lid for it. That's a super canning jar! Congratulations!
