I recently acquired several copies of Rick Sweeney's book ...

"Collecting Applied Color Label Soda Bottles"

Third Edition ~ 2002

Which are now available for $45.00 each with "free" shipping within the continental United States

I visted Rick's home where I aquired the books. I have his permission to sale them. Each book is an original 2002 publication. The books are out of print and rarely become available. Each book is signed by Rick himself and read ...

"Happy Collecting ~ Rick Sweeney - 2012"

The books are unused (old stock) and in excellent condition.

If you have questions regarding the books, please post them here for others to see or send me a PM.

TO ORDER:

If necessary I will eventually set up a Pay Pal account. But for the time being I am asking that each book be paid for in advance in the form of a money order made out in my name and mailed to me. The books will be mailed via regular mail in "bubble" envelopes the next postal day following receipt of payment.

If interested, please contact me through a PM and I will reply with my mailing address.

Please note it is not my intention to make a huge profit on the books, as that is not the case. But rather it is my hope this will be an opportunity for others to have this great book but who have been unable to find one.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks a lot

The following is in response to a member's question regarding who gets the proceeds from the sell of the books?

Rick Sweeney retains the copyright on the book. I "purchased" the books directly from him. He has granted me permission to sell the books. The Painted Soda Bottle Collectors Association (PSBCA) is no longer in existence, and Rick has not been involved with or heard from them in several years. Any and all proceeds/profit (which will be minimal) will be mine to regain my initial investment. I will be donating the value of one book ($45.00) to Antique-Bottles.net.

Thanks.

Another question from another member ...

Q: What was the original price of the book?

A: If I recall correctly, in 2002 when the Third Edition was first published, they sold for $45.00 online. And I do not believe that price included shipping. I have heard rumors of used copies selling on eBay for as much as $75.00.

Vintage57 ~

Thanks for the inquiry.

The book is spiral bound with glossy pages and lays flat for easy viewing. It contains a total of 174 pages. The first 78 pages contain some very informative and interesting information. The bottle listings and pictures start on page 79. (See below). The book contains approximately 1,600 listings with 1993 thru 2001 values and rarity indicators (Although considered obsolete now - but still useful as a general guide). It also contains approximately 1,200 color close ups of (actual) bottle labels.

Regarding the rarity indicators listed in the book, we all know that eBay has changed that somewhat. However, in Rick Sweeney's own words (which I concur) he told me ...

When the first edition was published in 1995, he and many collectors like himself did not have the use of eBay as it is today. He said the majority of his acls were aquired at bottle shows or from other collectors via letters, phone calls, etc. He said the Third Edition is the best one of them all in his opinion and is a compilation of the previous two editions. Rick said as a general rule a rare acl will almost always be a somewhat rare bottle.

Rick told me an interesting story about a "Big Hit" he has and that once sold several years ago for $1,000. I say "once sold" because the buyer was not happy with the bottle after he received it. Rick showed me that very same bottle and allowed me to examine it. It looked near mint to me and I could not see a single flaw in it. That is until Rick pointed it out to me. And even then it wasn't visible until you held it just right in the light. The "only" thing wrong with it was a small, dull spot about the size of a nickle on the otherwise glossly label. But apparently the buyer wanted one in pristine condition, which he may never find. The last Rick heard, there were only about six known examples of that bottle. And he is proud to say he still ownes one of them. I felt honored just to hold it! [:D]

Thanks again to all.

"Big Hit" ... (Which some collectors consider the Holy Grail of acls).

P.S. ~

The main point of my "Big Hit" story is that it is listed in Rick's acl book as ER for extremely rare ...

... and it probably always will be! (Maybe) [;)]
