a ball tip is very safe tip to start with. it does the job and does little damage if you dont push to fast. i have one on a 4 1/2 foot probe and like it. it is a little hard to start but once you get going its good. dont try to push your probe down in one smooth motion. it is better for your probe if you "pump" it to get a good start. push in a few inches and draw back. repeat this motion untill you get a good start. what you do not want to do is bend or kink the probe. it will defeat the bead and make a lot drag. just take your time and dont push through anything and you should be ok. one hour of good probing is better than a trip to the gym, i usually get sore after a long mourning of using the probe. i usually dig backyards in town and usually the onnly thing i worry about is cable tv wires buried.all the other utilities are overhead or come in from the front. when in doubt have them marked! have fun, good luck.
