Hey Folks!
Things have been crazy around here , but finally got a chance to get into some pits yesterday. Found four pits so far but have not found the oldest pits yet. The property dates to 1860's and possibly 1840's. The pits that have been dug are 1880's to turn of the century. There are older pits here, just need to find them. Even though the pits were not too old, they were alot of fun to dig. My buddy had his first chance at digging a pit and loved every second of it. The pits were not deep , only about 4 to 5 footers. One brick lined one was the first dug. It was newer and empty. Good practice hole. The next hole was not lined and very crunchy. The next two pits to follow were just as crunchy. Four pits , two diggers and a little support from my buddy's Grandpa. He told us we were crazy and had too much energy until he started seeing the bottles popping out. The person who used these pits only had one type of medicine , and it came in warranted flasks of all sizes. We ended up with about 45 bottles out of the pits, mostly flasks, and local beers. There was a nice hutch from Massilon Oh. There were several beers from Cincy Oh. There were large beers from Akron Oh , with strange tooled tops, and a few other odds and ends. The old pits are here somewhere , but tommorow is gonna be rain all day. Have to hit'em some other time. Here are a few pictures of the dig. This first picture is of the empty brick pit as it was getting filled back in.
