Found this roughened area beside the seam(at the base) on the Ball half gallon in my previous post of today. Approx. 3/8 by 1 & 5/8 inches. Slight angle on upper end.

Hello OldBottleDigger; That is a nice picture of an early mold patch insert for some kind of a nicked mold with damage in the cavity. I can't tell from the picture exactly where it is the cavity but it looks like it is near the bottom of a square jar. Maybe another picture could help with that. Thanks for showing us this one. The marks on early glass making - always hit my Bottlemystery interest spot. RED Matthews

The patch is on one side of the seam, right at the bottom of the half gallon Ball jar I had posted earlier today. I was having a problem getting the light just right. Laid the jar on it's side for better lighting. Will try again for a better pic.

Thankds OlfBottleDigger, That is a seam repair, where the heal corner point got broken by handling. They milled from the top of the bottom plate cut-out corner that was damaged.
Then it looks like they went up that side about three or four inches to enable putting in a couple screws and dowels to hold the insert. These insert pieces would run hotter than the mold would and that accounts for the cloth like texture of the glass. That texture is created because of carbon in the iron washing out of the metal at that higher temperature. Just like it did in the half leaf mold repair metal surfaces.
I would have to say they did a good job of repairing the mold. So it was able to produce a good product. Just a bottle mystery presented nicely. Thank you.
