I always heard owls and for most of my life I was looking up in the higher branches, little did I know they are usually close to the ground. They are amazing creatures for sure. Rick do you have a photo of that owl?

This is really weird but as I was typing the above note I heard crows and blue jays in the back yard no kidding I just took this photo. Pretty cool another Barred Owl in two days.

Awesome pics of the owls! Here's a great shot of an elk in someones side yard, that Penn Digger grabbed the other day. I'll share it here for him.[:)]

I can't imagine digging bottles and looking up to see one of those! (wapiti)

Careful how many owls you see and under what circumstances some people believe they are omens and not necessarily good ones, don't think I've ever had a bad consequence though a large white owl tryed to fly in the drivers window of the wife's 69 Mach 1 one evening when we were cruising up Lake Fanny Hill on Route 1 in Bel Air, MD.

Steve's correct...there's lots of folklore about owls.... both good and bad. One night back in the 80's I had a cool older 4wd Isuzu trooper with auxillary lights...Was driving from Buffalo NY down to visit my family...It was full dark and a great horned owl swooped directly towards my windshield but slightly elevated at the upper reach of the lights....He came in level and slow and may have been using the light to hunt by....when he was just near me he put his legs and feet out as if to land, but by then i was past him...

Well thanks for the heads up fellas but as my father in law says and I quote, "I'll Live Till I Die". In the meantime I consider myself fortunate to have seen one in the wild. Joe what state was it that Penn Digger saw the Elk, I assume Pa do they live there? Ive never seen one, what a beautiful animal. Thanks for the compliment Dugout, for every good picture there is 15 bad ones it seems.

Nice pics Kevin. There are 2 main herds here in PA with the help of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.. Maybe Joe can expound about them? That pic was taken about an hour from here near Benezette, PA. We do have a small herd about 10 to 15 minutes away that are thought to be stragglers from the biggger herds. The bull in the picture is actually a rather small one. There was one behind him about 3 times the size. I will see if I can send Joe another pic and have him zoom in. Awesome creatures that are protected here in PA, thank goodness.

I am partial to loons, love the sight and sound of them. Since you are from Maine, any pics or links to audio? They are the highlight of our yearly trip to Northern Maine. A few loons of another breed on this forum too!
