Hello R in N! I always ponder that question too. The area I plucked this from has produced several black bottles of similar vintage, makes me wonder if an old cabin once stood by the riverside, or perhaps trappers frequented the area. I can just see a group of guys on the riverbank. sippin' some ales & watching the steamers traverse the river. Blessedly, they tossed their empties into the drink!

Back to the original question. What you have is a three piece mold bottle and it is very possible that the two top halves were from a different batch of glass and the result is dark base and a lighter two piece top. IMHO
Seems reasonable to me - thanks for your input, OMD.
