Thanks for the info PD. Iwould have never thought that they were in Pa. I did take this photo of a loon on the same hike. We have them at the coast in fall, winter and early spring. On certain days when they feel like it they will call to each other, but overall fairly quiet. Really big birds they are awesome divers as well. I forgot my snow shot of the house after the snow.

Took all day, two bowls of soup and a couple of Sam Adams to deal with this.

Saturday morning Laur is pretty certain she saw a Fisher cat coming up our back trail from the swamp... I went down and checked the tracks, from what I could tell in the granular snow it well may have been....Also had one run through the lumber yard where I worked a few years ago.

I have never seen one of those but I hear they were introduced in this area to kill porcupine. Thanks for the extra Elk photos.

Spot on about the fishers, re-introduced in many states to kill the pesky, rodent like porcupine. Nasty creatures that rip the guts out of other animals with their backwards slanting teeth. Rumored to slink through the snow and come up under the porcupine where they have no quills! Wapiti as you mentioned in describing the elk is said to be Iroquois meaning "white rump." Similar to the common white tails in name recognition? Massive size difference though.

It looks like you have quite a zoom lens, Do you mind if I ask what camera you took your pics with?
I dont mind, its a Canon power shot SX20 it has 12.1 meg pixels. it does take good pictures of wildlife and anything else. I just find it is safe to take alot of photos and pick the best of the bunch. PD were the elk origionally there and is there an effort to reintroduce them?

Hey these pictures are great, i go hiking all the time (day and night) and i rarely see any owls. I've "seen" one once, pretty close actually. I was biking on one of the dirt trails that go around Alum Creek (north of columbus ohio- great trails) and one of 'em swopped by my head. I think he got within my arms reach eh? Pretty neat.
On some of my night hikes we sneak up on owls sitting way high up in the trees. First time it was two of them- they got spooked, flew into some branches, possibly each other, then took off. The 2nd time it was just one big bird, and since he was by himself he didn't have another bird to run into when we scared him so he just sort of plowed into some branches and took off.
Not the most graceful creatures when they're startled... but then again, those probably weren't... or, at least they may not have been, owls at all. Just some other big birds at night maybe...

They reintroduced Elk in Pennsylvania? That's neat yo. I can't imagine something like that in ohio, i *believe the biggest thing we got around is white tailed deer.... and i've heard there's black bear somewhere out by zanesville.

That toyota doesn't look too happy
