Black Glass

Ok this is one of my best bottles...given to me by my father (who is also in construction)...He found this years ago while excavating near some old cannon house here in Philadelphia. Can anyone give me an idea on the age? Thanks!

Sand Pontil mark?

Same bottle with a rough glass pontil mark...yes/no?

Hi,

You bottle is what’s know as a black glass cylinder these bottles would have probably contained some kind of alcoholic beverage probably rum or perhaps a heavy porter. This form of bottle with the sand chip pontil usually dates from about 1790-1820. Its probably of English manufacture.

English, sand pontil. Need a clear picture of the lip configuration as this can tell us a lot. Bottle is too tall to be considered a mallet and falls more into the squat cylinder catagory. I would say about 1770ish. Maybe between 1770-1790. It could be earlier but without a clear picture of the lip one cannot tell. I have both a 1770 and a 1800 version of this bottle and the lips are distinctive for their era. The general shape of you bottle including the neck is closer to my 1770 bottle. Nice one[8D]

Hmmmm........1780-1790 at a guess. Don't you just love these crude handblown early glass bottles. Personally I can't get enough of them.

LOL this bottle is so irregular, the base is lopsided and so is the lip...I hope they didnt pay full price for this

Mate, they are all lopsided and irregular in one way or another. It is what gives handblown early glass its' character and appeal. Some can barely stand up by themselves.
