Digging at the site of the old Dayton, NJ hotel many years ago my wife and I found this free blown blue pontil bottle which is probably a cologne. The intense blue color reminds me of South Jersey blown glass of the 1850s. That this paper thin glass survived in such beautiful condition after being thrown into a trash dump about 140 years ago is amazing.
It's 9 inches tall with a rolled lip and open pontil.
Interested in your observations and comments on this bottle.

Have you met Steve Sewell on the forum yet? He is a real wealth of info on historic flasks and other older pontiled glass. Wonder if he may have some input. Im leaning toward a historic early 19th century perfume.

Yo Jerry,

That is an elegant vessel... I don't care what anyone says. [8D] I wanna see more pictures, please. Daylight, if you got em...

Tall, deep blue, elegantly formed, personally dug in a hotel dump, to boot. Not much more that one could hope for in a dug bottle. Looks amazing!

Is the neck ground for a stopper? I've gotta go look at some books.

Hello jerrypev; I think your cobalt bottle is a fine example of an early bottle. I would like to see a clearer picture of the pontil. I have to assume that it was made with a shaped iron punty that had some hot glass on the contact end. Maybe a picture taken outside on a sunny day would show it better.

Also Steve Atkinson is a great friend of mine and he knows South Jersey Glass better than any of us.

Thanks for your comments so far. The inside of the lip is not ground for a stopper. The pontil is exactly the type of circular broken glass pontil found on medicine bottles of the mid 1800s.
If I saw the bottle at an antique shop I might be inclined to assume it was a reproduction. But my wife and I dug the bottle in a refuse dump behind the site of the old Dayton hotel after the hotel was demolished in the 1970s. Most of the bottles from the dump were from the 1870s and 80s.
My digital camera doesn't do well with closeups but I'll see if I can get some better pictures.

Slightly fuzzy but possibly better picture of pontil.

At that size and in that form I think it may have been a barber bottle
